Walking around Vail’s Bighorn Park this fall, parents and kids can experience the adventure of reading with the latest StoryWalk installation, “Read Island.”

The latest selection from the Vail Public Library was written by Nicole Magistro and illustrated by Alice Feagan, both of whom are long-time Eagle County residents. The installation provides the book in both English and Spanish.

Magistro, who worked as a journalist and spent 15 years as the owner of the Bookworm in Edwards, said her whole career has been in words. Getting back to her writing roots after selling the Bookworm in 2020 was the logical next step, she said.

“Read Island” is her first picture book — told in rhymes — which follows a girl and her friends who travel to a magical island made of books.

“It is a story about the adventure that books can take you on and that sort of transportation is always available to us,” Magistro said.
